When you joined the military, did you feel bad about leaving your parents/family?

I am thinking about infantry. When i told my mom this, she put on quite an emotional display. My moms not really affectionate, or emotional with me and my siblings. So when i told her and my dad of what i was doing, I didn't know how act. It made me feel really bad. Anyone have something similar happen to them?
